ALTON Runners put in a strong finish to the Southern Cross Country League when Haslemere Border staged the final race over the gruelling Devil’s Punch Bowl course.

The first Alton man home was Alistair Morey in a creditable 49th place, with David Hayles close behind in 55th.

Then came Diego Maldonado in 80th, Richard Taylor 83rd, Chris Sandy 87th, Tiziano Tesolin 91st, Philip Scrase 104th, Michael Pearce 153rd, Richard Scrase 179th and Terry Newman 191st.

Leading the Alton ladies was Debbie Rhodes in a fine 26th and Naomi Shaylor in 29th. They were followed home by Jane Scrase (82nd), Caroline Freeman (133rd) and Jenny French (142nd).

Alton Runners came tenth in the race, their best result of the season, and they finish 14th overall out of 23 teams.

Alton Runners train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.45pm and meet at Alton Sports Centre before going down to The Butts for a warm-up.
