ALTON 2, GOSPORT BOR 0
FOLLOWING a strong performance against the league leaders, Alton Ladies made no mistake against bottom side Gosport Borough and picked up three valuable points.
Gosport came out fighting at Amery Hill and played some nice hockey through the middle of the park. However, Alton quickly worked out which players Gosport relied on and worked the ball around them.
Some confusion with the umpire and the rules left Alton frustrated and Gosport pushed out to force a good save from Louise Yeadon.
This lapse was the wake-up call Alton needed and some focused play brought them the first goal. Kat Gilbert played a pin-point pass to Steph Millington who was tripped by the last defender and Jenny Rust stepped up to convert the penalty stroke.
Gosport came out fast from the blocks for the second half and the game became rather frantic and physical as the visitors searched for the equaliser.
Defender Sophie Reading had to retire after being ‘taken out’ and Alton had to adjust their formation. Gosport took advantage with a couple of short corners, but Alton defended them well and were soon back on the attack.
Some slick passing moved the ball into the Gosport D and young Maya Morrison pounced to slot home under the keeper’s pads.
Alton comfortably saw out the remaining ten minutes and the win moves them to eighth place in the Hampshire Division One table.
