After a five-year absence, the 31st Gibbet Hill 10km race made a triumphant return, drawing 161 runners to tackle its notorious challenging route.
Set against the stunning backdrop of the Surrey Hills, the race took place in perfect summer conditions, offering participants a mix of rugged terrain and breathtaking views.
Organised by Haslemere Border Athletics Club (HBAC) and sponsored by St Edmund’s School, Fitstuff, and Tesco, the race started at The Lady of Lourdes Church.
From there, runners faced a four-kilometre climb to Gibbet Hill, followed by undulating trails across the Devil’s Punch Bowl, before a long descent to the finish line at Lion Green.

Marcus Etheridge claimed victory in a superb time of 35.08, followed by James Baker (35.57) and Julian Manning (38.23).
The women’s race saw a thrilling finish, with Rachel Walsh in first place in 43.18, just ahead of Bethany Rushton-Taylor (43.27) and Lizzie May (43.28).
Age category winners included: senior ladies: Rachel Walsh; F45-54: Christine Robinson; F55-64: Philomel Bennett; F65+: Kay Copeland; senior men: Luke Wertheim; M45-54: Oliver Gosden; M55-64: Daniel Allaway; M65+: Justin Clarke.
HBAC was represented by 23 runners, with James Turner finishing as the club’s first male in eighth place overall, and Nina Dunleavy finishing fourth among the women.

Dunleavy also received the Chloe Piper Memorial Trophy, presented by race director Stephen Sutton, on behalf of Chloe’s mother, Jane.
Sutton also presented the prizes and expressed thanks to all sponsors, volunteers, and marshals whose efforts made the event possible. Special appreciation was also extended to Haslemere Girl Guides, Lion’s Den, Dylan’s Ice Cream, and The Mill for their support.
With overwhelmingly positive feedback from runners and praise from the England Athletics adjudicator, the 2026 race is provisionally scheduled for Wednesday, July 8.
