Sydney Marathon: Farnham Runners duo claim seventh Abbott World Marathon Major

Farnham Runners duo Georgie Abrook and Linda Tyler travelled to Sydney to claim their seventh Abbott World Marathon Major and found that Australia did not disappoint.

Though they found the course tough and hilly it followed a stunning route, crossing the Harbour Bridge, weaving through The Rocks, past Circular Quay, and then out to Centennial Park and Moore Park before returning to the finish directly opposite the Opera House.

Tyler won her F65 age group by four minutes in an excellent time of 3:35.42, after also winning this age group in the 2026 London Marathon. After sustaining an injury during training, Abrook was delighted to cross the finish line in 4:14.54.

Other Farnham Runners took part in the first two Hampshire Road League races, the Totton 10km and the Overton 5.

Conditions were good for the two-lap undulating Totton course and Marina Greig, in training for the Frankfurt Marathon, gained a personal best.

Tony Jones was first back for the club in 42.49, followed by new member Grant Hopkins, Andy Papworth and Will Pickett for a complete A team.

Victoria Trust led in the ladies in a fine time of 44.00. Candy Waller crossed the line next with Gemma Soar and Greig as the final A team scorers with Colette Grist and Sandra Hickey also representing the club.

Ten members tackled a hillier event through the scenic Hampshire countryside at Overton. Tim Naylor finished 35th in a time of 30.57. Next back were newcomers Grant Hopkins and Victoria Trust (third F35) in 35.27 and 35.32 respectively. The final men’s A team scorers were Terry Copeland (third M65) and Paul Keogh.

Completing the ladies A team were Candy Waller (third F55), Colette Grist and Kay Copeland with Sandra Hickey and Jane Georghiou (second F70) also representing the club.
