ALTON Cycling Club/Owens Cycles ran their 25-mile Club Championship time trial event for the Wilson Webb Trophy.
Riders encountered a headwind on the long return leg from the Coxbridge roundabout down to the Holybourne turn and times were not as good as many had hoped for on a July evening.
In the end, no Alton rider was able to to break the hour mark, but Shaun Blow was fastest and will look forward to receiving his trophy at the club dinner. His time of 1hr 00mins 57secs beat Steve Newton (1-02-15) and Michael Ludgate (1-07-06).
Regular visitor James Long, from Farnham Triathlon Club, was quickest overall with 58mins 02secs, although he admitted to going out too quickly over the first 10 miles.
Fastest lady was Virginia McGee of the Charlotteville Club with 1-02-56.
Several riders opted for the 10-mile distance and former Alton member Jack Freeman, now riding for VC Meudon, recorded 22-52 on a regular road bike with junior gear ratios. Alton’s Charlie Williams returned 25-31.
Alan Jacob, Eddie Stevens, Dick Weatherbed and Jim Woods officiated on the night.
