CHAWTON Park were involved in two interesting games, losing one and winning one.
In the first, Chawton ladies met Winchester-based Riverside in a Riversmeet League fixture. Two rinks played away and two at home, and Chawton expected a tough match against last year’s winners.
Both the away rinks were up against formidable opponents and despite playing some excellent bowls, Chawton lost both matches.
Chawton found little gain in home advantage, but Brenda Plumpton’s rink took the lead at the 15th end and romped away to win 30-13. It was not enough, however, and Chawton lost 66-69.
Next up was a first-round match against Atherley (Southampton) in the national Top Club competition. The format comprised ladies’ and men’s two-wood singles, mixed pairs, mixed triples and mixed rinks.
Chawton began strongly, with singles wins for Linda Habberfield (15-9) and John Blair (17-13). Barry Smith and Brenda Plumpton led from the start of their mixed pairs and won by an overall score of 29-14.
The mixed rinks, skipped for Chawton by Adam White, was evenly balanced in the early stages, but Chawton took control from the 15th end and won 22-11.
Chawton’s only loss was in the mixed triples where they were outclassed by some very experienced bowlers.
