THE last fortnight has seen much activity at Alton Bowling Club.

The men recorded an excellent 4-1 win at Cove in the National Top Club on Sunday. This followed a hard-fought battle between Alton and Cove in the County Club Championship the week before. Alton were ahead by one and holding shot on the last end, but victory went to Cove as their skip moved the jack back with his last wood, giving his side the narrowest of wins, 68-67.

The National Two Fours game at Alton Social was also a close-run thing, with Social edging to a 38-35 victory.

In the National Champion of Champions, Terri Beech, playing her first match as ladies club champion, met Sheila Forrester of Hook. It was 12-12 at halfway, but Forrester’s experience told and she pulled ahead to take the match. In his first CoC match, Paul Schofield secured a comfortable 21-9 win over Don Stephens of Headley.

The County Men’s Pairs saw mixed success. There were wins for John Blair/John Driver and David Sims/Andy Payne, but defeats for Paul Schofield/Pete Tarbutt and Ron Roberts/Bernard Abate.

Alton ladies won twice in their County Fours, beating Terri Willcocks’ Farnborough Gate four 17-16 and then seeing off Oakley 21-16. Alton will now meet Alton Social in the Area Final on June 11. However, Alton lost out to Maureen du Gay’s Pyestock team in the triples.

Eric Smith beat T Varnell 21-10 in the Whitchurch O60s singles.

In the Whitchurch League, Alton A won 3-2 against Hyde Abbey, but lost 4-1 to St Mary Bourne Hawks. Alton B defeated Howard Park 4-1, but lost 3-2 to Oakley Kites. Alton achieved a 41/2-1/2 success against Howard Park in their first Basingstoke League match of the season. Alton lost 4-1 to Cranleigh in the Three Counties Fellowship and went down to Hook Sapphires in the Stan Hardman League.
