CHAWTON Park started their Bramley Bowl (Hampshire inter-club men’s league) campaign with a good win against newly promoted Banister Park from Eastleigh.

But the joy of Saturday turned to despair on Sunday when Chawton entertained Dolphin IBC (Poole) in the Egham Trophy mixed competition.

With Chawton’s away rinks, skipped by Graham Robinson and Dave Sims, running behind, the game was in the balance.

But Robinson secured a 15-all draw, while Sims’ rink recorded an unlikely one-shot win, and with the overall score now 68-68, an extra end was required to settle the outcome.

The Adam White rink had been chosen before the match started and Chawton were holding a close shot with just the skips to play.

The opposing skip’s first wood was weighted and well off line, but struck another short wide Dolphin wood that then finished nestled against the jack. This proved the match-winner and robbed Chawton of victory against a much bigger club.

Adam White also played two singles over the weekend. He beat Tony Webb from Riverain IBC (Herts) 21-16 in the Southern Counties Championship for county winners and then defeated Dave Bines at Banister Park in the National Champion of Champions by a comfortable 21-10 margin.

A busy week for Chawton ended with a friendly match against West Berks IBC who ran out 109-82 victors.

Chawton Park begin their Bowls4free initiative this week, with 57 people signed up for six weeks free tuition and coaching.
