BRIGHTWELL Tennis Club’s annual championships culminated in an exciting Finals Day on Sunday.
In a repeat of last year’s men’s singles final, Gary Saul defeated Sam Axton 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 in a match that swung from one player to the other. Saul has now won four singles titles in five years.
Jackie West did not drop a game in winning the ladies’ singles final, beating Vic Brown 6-0, 6-0. It was Jackie’s 12th singles title, but also first for 12 years.
In the plate singles final, the canny Richard Apthorp defeated junior Dominic Morris 6-2, 6-1.
The men’s doubles final pitted singles opponents Saul and Axton against each other again. In another close battle, Axton and Ben Wiltshire defeated Saul and James Chamberlin 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.
The ladies’ doubles final was also very close, with Cat McKeracher and Caroline Weaver retaining their title, 6-4, 6-4, over singles finalists Jackie West and Vic Brown.
Jackie West continued into her third final of the day. This was the mixed doubles and West and Phil Dixon beat the holders, James Chamberlin and Rose Dixon, 6-2, 6-2.
The mixed plate was won by Judy Sauter and Nick Fielding who defeated Stavros Kotsireas and Caroline Weaver 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 and the junior tournament winner was Caleb Walker.
