FRENSHAM have suffered some crushing Village Cup defeats to their near-neighbours in recent years, but the I’Anson side at last turned the tables in the fifth-round match on Sunday, thanks to a captain’s innings from George Breddy.
Rowledge fielded only three of the first team who had played the day before, but they had Chris Yates Jnr back and in good touch at the top of the order.
He and Ian Metcalfe added 65 for the second wicket and it was a big relief for Frensham when Ray Clarke came on and quickly induced a mistake from Yates – caught for 48.
Metcalfe made 38 and Joel Swan took control for the second part of the innings. His unbeaten 66, including six sixes, saw the visitors past 200. Spinners Clarke and Tim Knight did a good job and Adam Goulder bowled well for his 3-33 in nine overs.
A rain delay during the Frensham innings did nothing to disturb Breddy’s concentration and, apart from some streaky edges, he never gave a chance.
Tom Charman and Jack Richards struck some important boundaries, but it was all about Breddy as the experienced pair of Chris Yates Snr and Tim Wheatley tested his technique.
Shea Taylor (1-25) bowled nine very accurate overs against his former club, but the captain would not be moved. With Harvey Herrington giving solid support, Breddy finished the game with a six in the 39th over.
The former Lord Wandsworth pupil faced 107 balls and hit 16 fours and five sixes.
Frensham have little time to rest on their laurels. They travel to play Sibton Park, the Kent champions, in the sixth round (last 32) this Sunday.
ROWLEDGE 214-9 (J Swan 66 not out, C Yates Jnr 48, I Metcalfe 38, J Wish 20; A Goulder 3-33, R Clarke 2-44, T Knight 2-53).
FRENSHAM 218-8 (G Breddy 130 not out, T Charman 20, J Richards 12, A Goulder 11; T Wheatley 2-32, C Yates Snr 2-58).
