CHURT are promoted as Surrey Championship Division Five champions after winning by five wickets at Chertsey.

Put in on a bowler-friendly wicket, Chertsey were in disarray at 24-5 as stand-in skipper Dom Saint rotated his bowlers. Spinner Ben Mitchchell was the most effective, taking 5-19 in 10 overs, while seamer Ron Defreitas claimed 3-13 in two short spells.

Jake Taylor rallied his side with 32, but Chertsey were dismissed for 92.

Two wickets down for 22, Churt had work to do and opener Will Hucker dropped anchor while man-of-the-match Mitchell took the sting out of the bowling with a typically aggressive 32. Hucker went at 75, leaving Greg Talbot and Rowley Marshall to see Churt home in the 23rd over.

Haslemere’s hopes of going up with Churt disappeared as they lost by 50 runs away to Old Emanuel. The home team posted 201 all out after a fine 85 by skipper Sajjad Ahmad. Haslemere were in tatters at 12-4 against the new-ball attack of Khurrum Malik and Farooq Butt. Simon Eastment and Keaghan Cronin (71) then shared a century stand, but a late collapse saw Haslemere all out for 151.

Haslemere II have won promotion from the Fullers Surrey League 2nd XI Div II and if they win their final game, they will be champions.
