ALTON 2nd XI consolidated second place in the Hampshire League County One with a hard-earned win over Purbrook II at the Jubilee Ground.

It was a fourth consecutive victory for Alton who had Ryan Hale to thank for their total of 191-7 in the 50 overs. The former first-team regular made an unbeaten 102 and found a solid partner in Howard Gadsby, the pair adding 67 for the third wicket.

Purbrook were in dire straits at 88-8 after some fine bowling, particularly by Tom Paul who took 4-33 in ten overs.

But Alton became complacent and Aaron Dean (37), James Gurney (33) and Sameen Mahboob (27 not out) ensured there was a painful sting in the tail.

The visitors were finally bowled out for 175 in the 49th over.

Alton will need to be more clinical when they visit leaders Hook & Newnham Basics II, also undefeated, this Saturday.
