NEIL Sampson gave a barn-storming captain’s performance as Grayshott III beat Brook by 102 runs in I’Anson Division Three.
It was a second consecutive defeat for the promotion hopefuls, but the damage was limited because leaders Tongham also lost as Kingsley continued their fight to avoid relegation, while Thursley were held to a draw by Bramley.
Invited to bat first at Broxhead, Grayshott III, despite some good batting by Rory Fenton (40), were in trouble at 103-5 (four wickets for Rhodri Williams) when Sampson came to the crease. The skipper hit an impressive 58, including 10 well-struck fours, and enabled his side to post 204-9 in 48 overs.
Sampson then opened the bowling and, swinging the ball at a good pace, snapped up 4-7 in his first spell. Alex Johns counter-attacked with a fine 53, but Sampson returned with another burst of 4-1 to leave a stunned Brook all out for 102.
Not content with dramatic figures of 11.2-5-8-8, Sampson was also involved in the other two wickets, catching one batsman and running out the other. For one very happy man, a truly remarkable day, and it was also enjoyed by dad Graham who turned out for the side.
Tongham made the bold decision to bat first at Kingsley and, 24 overs later, were all out for 82. Only Tyler Carrington (30) and skipper Liam Gadd lasted for long against Steve Cooper (6-47) and Oli Cooper, while Nick Randall took two wickets in eight balls.
Sam Parrott (29) and Dean Murphy (28 not out) then guided Kingsley to victory in 21 overs.
Derek Agge hit a second successive century for Thursley and again it was a power-packed effort. His 130 came off 90 balls and contained 17 fours and five sixes, meaning that he has struck 17 maximums in two innings. Ed Evans took a creditable 6-55, but Agge’s one-man show took Thursley to 219 all out and left them 52 overs to dismiss the visitors.
But Bramley were in no mood to roll over. Opener Ali Holmes made 58 and number 8 Dan Burstow ensured the draw with a defiant 38 not out.
In the other matches played, Dogmersfield II beat Peper Harow and Frensham III lost to Blackheath II, while Wood Street (168-8) drew with Tilford II (81-5).
