Surrey have appointed former Zimbabwe batter Grant Flower as an assistant coach.
Flower makes the short move to the Kia Oval after five seasons with Sussex.
In his time at Sussex, Flower helped a young team achieve promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2024 before finishing third this season.
As a player, top-order batter Flower played 288 times for Zimbabwe, including 67 Tests. He also played county cricket for Leicestershire and Essex alongside his international commitments.
As a batting coach, Flower has more than a decade of international experience. He started with Zimbabwe in 2010 before joining Pakistan for five years from 2014 to 2019. During that time, Pakistan won the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy at the Kia Oval. Flower moved to Sri Lanka for two years before joining Sussex in 2022.
Flower joins Surrey following assistant coach Jim Troughton’s decision to move back to Warwickshire.
“We’re delighted to confirm Grant Flower to our coaching group,” said Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of men’s cricket.
“We’re fortunate to be securing someone of Grant’s calibre and experience for the club.
“He will help our batting across all formats moving forward.”
“I’m really excited about joining Surrey and taking on this new challenge,” said Flower.
“Surrey is a club with a fantastic reputation, a strong cricketing culture and an incredibly talented and experienced group of players and coaches.
“The opportunity to be part of such a successful and ambitious club, with a proud history and a clear commitment to excellence, is something I’m very much looking forward to.
“Surrey has consistently set high standards on and off the field, and I’m excited about the opportunity to bring my experience, contribute fresh ideas and work alongside such a talented group.
“I’m passionate about developing players, helping them reach their full potential and being part of a team that continues to challenge for trophies.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the players and staff in November, building strong relationships and getting straight to work as we prepare for the 2027 season.
“It’s an exciting new chapter, and I can’t wait to get started.”
