A HIGH-SCORING but uneventful draw at the Park came to dramatic life in the last over.

With Farnham requiring one run off the last two balls for the winning draw against Esher, Chris Terry blocked the penultimate delivery before dispatching the last ball into the moat for a six.

Denied any Surrey Championship action by the weather the previous two weekends, Farnham were keen to get a game in and Tom Grimes had no hesitation inserting the visitors on a good-looking track. Bowling first continues to be a good option for Farnham.

A different opening attack of Tom Andrews and Ben Ungaretti bowled well without making an early breakthrough and Esher openers Mark Hopkinson and Will Edwards took the score to 41 before Andrews, a newcomer this season, bowled the more aggressive Hopkinson for 29.

Ungaretti trapped skipper Edwards in the next over and with two new men at the crease, Farnham looked to apply pressure.

However, Shoaib Khan, who has played T20 cricket for Pakistan, and Alex Martin calmly played themselves in and manipulated the strike cleverly in a match-defining partnership of 121.

Grimes rotated his bowlers and spinners Terry and Nathan Thorpe kept the run-rate under some sort of control.

Martin was finally caught behind for 61 off Josh Berry who bowled a disciplined spell. Esher used their maximum allowance of 55 overs and after some heavy hitting in the late stages by Khan and Jamie McCormack, closed on 258-5.

Khan, scoring at a run a ball, finished 115 not out and hit 13 fours and a six.

Farnham lost James Berry with 23 on the board, but Thorpe and Joel Walker prospered against the new ball, punishing anything short and driving fuller deliveries down the ground.

Walker raced to 36 from 43 balls before the introduction of spin brought about his downfall at 93, bowled by Nick Winder as he went for another big hit.

Ciaran Rooney then shared in a stand of 60 as Thorpe took the attack to Esher and reached his 50 in fine style.

But Farnham were set back when Rooney fell lbw to Winder (5-53) and with only one run added, Thorpe was run out for 84 off 97 balls (11 fours and a six), leaving the home side 154-4.

With the asking rate creeping up to more than seven an over, the chances of victory were receding and wickets fell as Farnham tried to stay in contention.

But Farnham, with their strong late order, never looked like losing and Terry’s mighty smite off the last ball even denied Esher the extra two points.
