TILFORD found the form that made them champions in 2014 as they beat I’Anson Cup holders Blackheath by a comfortable eight wickets at the Green.

Peter Melhuish decided to bat first, but Blackheath found it slow going against left-armers Huw Town-Jones and Jason Stones and scored only 18 in the first ten overs.

Tilford held their catches, notably in the slips, and despite a quick 26 from Harry Giles, the visitors were in trouble at 99-6. The late order did well to add another 45, but the total of 144 was below par. Town-Jones, Nigel Martyn and Geoff Coombe each took three wickets, while skipper Stones yielded just seven runs in nine overs.

Town-Jones and Denis Hounsham then put on 29 before Hugh Jolly broke the stand with his first ball. Mark Ramesar joined Town-Jones and the pair batted sensibly, mixing defence with aggression.

Blackheath tried nine different bowlers and Paul Nash eventually had Ramesar caught for 44 after a partnership of 103. Town-Jones finished 62 not out and completed the win with his ninth four to add to two sixes launched into the road.

Puttenham made it two wins from two games, beating Alfold by seven wickets. Dave Burke and skipper Simon Bannister shared a decent stand for Alfold’s third wicket, but thereafter Burke (49 not out) quickly ran out of partners as Syed Ahmed (4-12) and Aks Ilyas (3-21) demolished the late order.

Chasing a modest 108, Puttenham stuttered at 37-2, but opener James Andrews remained in control and his unbeaten 68, including eight fours and a six, completed a seven-wicket victory in just 26 overs.

Witley, at home to Dogmersfield, again got off to a rocky start, losing five wickets for 31, all to the dangerous Malik who finished with 6-17 in 9.1 overs. Ben Dobson (35) then shared decent partnerships with Matt Shea and Matt Lowndes, and 50 runs came from the last 11 overs as the home side recovered to 132 all out.

Dogmersfield found it no easier at first and were reduced to 5-4 after six dynamic overs from Ollie Hickman and Kurt Lyall. The momentum then swung the visitors’ way as Amer Bajwa and Raja put on 77. The introduction of spin helped slow the run-rate and Raja began to lose partners steadily. At 120-7, the outcome looked less certain.

However, there was no shifting Raja, who hit ten fours and three sixes in an unbeaten 70, and number 10 Imran Abbas hoisted a six to clinch victory in the 29th over.

Headley, after last week’s capitulation, gave a greatly improved batting performance and posted 215-6 in 46 overs after being inserted at Chiddingfold. The top three did most of the work and Harry Clarke (62) shared fine partnerships with Stuart Smith (31) and Gavin Arend, the latter top-scoring with 75.

Chiddingfold also began well and reached 100 for the loss of only one wicket. But despite Dean Spencer’s 73, they were never up with the run-rate and lost a flurry of wickets before ending the day on 144-7.

George Breddy scored a masterful 101 not out for Frensham, but they used up 47 overs in compiling 232-5 and left themselves insufficient time to bowl out Grayshott.

The home side were facing defeat at 21-3 and then 74-5, but Gary Hunt held up the Frensham bowlers with a gritty 70, well supported by Stuart Kennedy. New recruit Jordan Frost announced himself with 5-28 in 12 overs, but Grayshott battled to 133-7 and two points.

Wrecclesham conceded both their Division One and Division Four fixtures to Grayswood – an action that will be a cause of great concern to the competition.
