Waverley elected to bat, but found themselves 10-2 in the fourth over, with James Wright, a centurion in last year’s fixture, well caught by Baz Young at square-leg.
Nathan Thomas then bowled the dangerous Simon Brewer with a full-toss. Thomas struck again with the first ball of his second over, while, in contrast, Young’s first over included two wides, two no-balls and two boundaries.
At the halfway stage, Waverley were 71-5, but Elstead let their opponents off the hook. Simon Knox made a fine 41 and with Elstead conceding a generous 40 extras, Waverley reached 170 all out in the 37th over.
After a traditional outdoor tea, Darren Munden was dropped off the first ball of Elstead’s reply and he and John Warren then scored 47 in five overs before Adrian Day took the first of his four wickets.
In fact, three wickets fell in seven balls as Elstead lurched from 47-0 to 53-6 after 10 overs.
Thomas and Nick Taylor rebuilt the innings with a fluent partnership of 52 in six overs.
Giles Disney and Shaun Figg then supported Thomas as he skilfully farmed the bowling by hitting boundaries and stealing singles off the last ball of the over.
However, a no-ball messed up his strategy and he was left stranded on 39 not out as Elstead were dismissed for 133 after just 22 overs.
