FA Cup fever will come to The Memorial Ground when Farnham Town take on Sutton United in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday at 12.30pm.

Farnham entered the competition in the first qualifying round and reached this stage by winning 3-0 at Erith Town, 3-1 at Burgess Hill Town and 3-0 at home to Dorchester Town.

They are currently third in the Southern League Premier Division South, the seventh tier of English football, while Sutton - a Football League club for three seasons until their relegation in 2024 - are third from bottom of the National League, two levels higher than Farnham.

This is the furthest that Farnham have progressed in the FA Cup in their 119-year history, but one more win will take them into the first round proper and give them the chance of a glamorous draw against a League One or League Two side.

The all-ticket match could see a capacity crowd of 2,300 watching from within the ground, with many more tuning in on BBC television via the red button or iPlayer.

In 1989 - while playing in the Conference, the same level as they do now - Sutton caused one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history.

Goals from Tony Rains and Matthew Hanlan earned them a 2-1 third round victory over First Division Coventry City, who had won the cup two years earlier, in front of an 8,000 full house at their Gander Green Lane home.

But Farnham manager Paul Johnson did not discount the idea of his side pulling off a famous giant-killing act of their own.

He said: “It’s the FA Cup, so anything can happen. We’re in good form and they’re not in good form, so there’s every chance.

“Whatever happens, it will definitely be a memorable occasion for the club.”
