SUTTON UTD 2, ALDERSHOT TN 1
ALDERSHOT Town’s narrow defeat at Sutton United means they finish fifth in the National League and will host sixth-placed Ebbsfleet in the play-off eliminator match this Wednesday (May 2), kick-off 7pm at the EBB Stadium.
Sutton clinched third spot and a play-off semi-final place with a late deciding goal at Gander Green Lane.
The Shots almost took the lead on 17 minutes, Jamie Collins clearing a Scott Rendell effort off the line, and it remained goalless at half-time.
Just four minutes into the second half, Sutton made the breakthrough with a close-range goal from Tommy Wright. But the visitors were level nine minutes later. Shamir Fenelon was fouled and the reliable Rendell made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Rendell saw a glancing header go just wide as Aldershot went for the winner, but it was Sutton who snatched victory in the 79th minute. Lewis Ward was unable to hold Tom Bolarinwa’s powerful drive and substitute Ross Lafayette, a former Shots striker, put away the loose ball.
