Ten-man Aldershot Town slipped to a 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham United’s under-21s in their National League Cup group stage game.

First-half goals from Daniel Cummings and Jephthah Medine (2) gave the Hammers all three points in front of a crowd of 491 at the EBB Stadium.

The Hammers took the lead in the ninth minute when Jethro Medine’s cutback was flicked in by Cummings past Shots keeper Charlie Patmore.

The Shots had their first effort on target of the evening on 20 minutes, when Marcus Wyllie’s shot from just outside the box was held by West Ham keeper Lanre Awesu.

Aldershot went close again three minutes later when Hakeem Sandah cut in from the right and his left-footed delivery just evaded Jack Matton and went wide of the far post.

West Ham nearly doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Ryan Battrum’s right-footed shot at the back post was superbly blocked by the returning Ollie Harfield at close range.

The Hammers had another attempt a minute later when Riley Hargan let fly from range with a right-footed effort which was parried away to safety by Patmore.

West Ham doubled their advantage on 32 minutes when Jethro Medine’s delivery from the right was clinically finished by Jephthah Medine.

Shots boss Scott Davies made a quadruple change in the 33rd minute, with Joe Lewis-Evans, Jordan Alves, Riley Hadley and Alfonso Tenconi replacing Harfield, Tristan Abrahams, Sandah and Marcus Dinanga.

The Hammers scored their third of the evening on 35 minutes when Jephthah Medine was played through on goal and drove forward before clinically slotting his finish past Patmore.

West Ham nearly scored a fourth in the 43rd minute when Preston Fearon’s left-footed shot hit the outside of the right-hand post.

Davies made his fifth and final substitution of the evening at half-time, with Tyrese Dyce replacing Michael Stickland.

The Hammers almost went 4-0 up on 57 minutes when Ezra Mayers’ header back across goal was superbly headed off the line by Alves.

The Shots went down the other end of the pitch a minute later, and Elijah Oladunjoye cut in on his left foot and hit an effort goalwards which was well held by Awesu.

Aldershot had their next attempt at goal in the 61st minute, but Lewis-Evans hit his curling left-footed shot over the bar.

West Ham nearly scored a fourth on 68 minutes when Mayers’ effort on the stretch at the back post rattled the crossbar.

The Shots were reduced to ten men in the 81st minute when Brody Peart received a straight red card for an off the ball incident.

The Hammers went close to going 4-0 up in stoppage time when Callum Leacock’s right-footed shot rattled the left-hand post.

Next up for the Shots is a trip to Solihull Moors in the National League on Saturday, September 12 (3pm kick-off).
