Badshot Lea manager Gavin Smith saw room for improvement after his side beat Guildford City 2-0 at Westfield Lane in the Aldershot Senior Cup on Monday evening.

Goals from George Hedley and Baback Dehghani sealed the Baggies’ place in the last four and set up a trip to fellow Isthmian League South Central Division outfit Hartley Wintney in the semi-finals. Guildford finished with ten men after Frankie Jamieson was sent off for dissent.

“We had a lot of possession,” said Smith. “It was frustrating, because when you have that possession you want to be converting it into something and I didn't feel we did that. That's credit to them because they set up and made it difficult – defensively they did well and we didn't have that quality in the final third. I'm disappointed we haven't scored more – especially when they went down to ten. We should be doing better. There were not enough people willing to take risks. The one risk we took, Babs scored from 25 yards – that's what's needed in games like that. We want to play possession football but there's got to be an outcome, whether it's a shot or getting a corner. The important thing was to get through with no injuries, take people off and rest some people.

“There's a few boys who have been out for a while that needed to get some minutes in their legs and it was good to get that. We want to go on and win this. We've got our league targets, and we are on course for that. We've got to win some games but that's in our hands, which is good. We want something else to look forward to, so a semi-final with the chance of playing at Aldershot in the final – we’re pleased with that.”

Monday’s win followed a 2-2 draw for the Baggies at South Park in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Saturday. Badshot Lea raced into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Kareem Akinnibi and Lamin Ceesay, but goals from Craig McGee and Sam King rescued a point for the hosts.
