Tadley Calleva 1, Alton Town 4
TWO goals from prolific striker Matt Bunyan set Alton Town on their way to a place in the semi-finals of the North Hampshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
Further goals from Scott Sanderson and George Spiers saw the Brewers cause a big upset against their Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division opponents at Barlows Park.
Alton thoroughly deserved to progress as they put Tadley to the sword and, in truth, never looked in danger of losing.
Making several changes from Saturday’s league defeat against Hythe & Dibden because of injury, Alton began brightly and almost made a dream start but Sanderson saw his header cleared off the line.
But the Brewers didn’t have too long to wait for the breakthrough as Bunyan headed home Matt Graham’s inswinging corner just two minutes later.
Alton were good value for their lead as the defence stood firm against any sporadic Tadley attacks while the Brewers were a constant threat going forward.
And they duly doubled their lead midway through the first half as Sanderson pounced on a defensive slip to hammer the ball past the helpless Tadley goalkeeper.
Tadley came more into the game in the second half without ever really threatening the Alton goal, and the Brewers killed off the game midway through the half as Bunyan curled the ball from all of 30 yards past the stranded home goalkeeper to put his side 3-0 up.
Brett Denham scored from close range to pull a goal back for the hosts, but it proved no more than a consolation as Spiers rounded off the scoring with a header from a corner for Alton’s fourth.
