TANE Caubo was the hero on Tuesday night as Badshot Lea dug themselves out of a big hole to win the Coxbridge Roundabout derby on penalties.
He scored twice in four minutes and then converted the decisive penalty in the shootout as the Baggies came back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to knock local rivals Farnham Town out of the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup at the Memorial Ground.
In between his second-half goals he also missed a golden chance – and his first half display was equally dynamic.
In the space of nine minutes he was denied a penalty, had a goal disallowed and forced Farnham keeper Richard Ossai into a great save.
After a quiet opening Farnham scored in the seventh minute with their first shot of the match.
Two neat passes on the right of the box set up Elliot Cardona to fire right-footed across Kallum Lunn into the net.
In the 12th minute the referee waved away Badshot Lea’s pleas for a penalty after Caubo appeared to be brought down from behind nine yards out.
Six minutes later Ossai saved well from a header and Caubo followed up to squeeze the ball home from a tight angle, but the flag was up for offside during the build-up play.
Ossai then raced out to block Caubo’s shot at point-blank range in the 21st minute.
Farnham’s next significant raid on the Badshot Lea goal put them two up on the stroke of half-time.
A Farnham player broke clear in the box only to have his legs taken away by a sliding tackle, and Charlie Horwood stepped up to bury the spot kick.
After the break, Farnham threatened up front, but it was Badshot who found the net.
In the 61st minute Nick Medcraft put in a good high right cross, and Caubo met it with a towering header into the top right corner.
A minute later the ball deflected off a Farnham defender into the path of Caubo who tried to steer it in, but sent it over the angle of post and bar.
Badshot Lea equalised in the 65th minute, Caubo sweeping in the rebound after a Baggies player made a surging run down the right and passed to a team-mate.
He cut inside, but had his shot blocked by Ossai.
The Baggies were reduced to ten men in the 77th minute, when Matty Matthews was sent off after a second yellow card, and Lunn made a superb save ten minutes from time.
Farnham kicked first in the shootout and captain Harry Oakley had his shot saved by Lunn.
Medcraft netted for Badshot Lea and Horwood equalised for Farnham, then after a lengthy and elaborate run-up Mo Dampha’s effort was saved by Ossai.
Max Meaton, Josh Stepney, Dean, Jake Hawker, Trah and Dean Rule all scored to make it 4-4 after both sides had taken their scheduled five penalties.
Tanner then hit the bar for Farnham with the first sudden death kick, allowing Caubo to cap his night with the winner.
