THREE games in five days was not the best preparation for the two cup finals that will complete a long and gruelling season for Farnham Town.
But four points from those matches proved enough to achieve the top-ten target set by manager Paul Tanner. Farnham finish tenth in the Combined Counties League Premier Division.
Town returned from lowly Chessington with an emphatic 4-0 victory, the goals scored by Ben Williams, Matt Glass, Jon Lancashire and Mark Corbett, the latter returning from Walton & Hersham to see out the season with his former club.
Farnham faced a much stiffer task at mid-table Windsor last Saturday, but they looked to be well in control at half-time, leading 2-0 after goals from Stan Staines and Corbett.
However, fatigue caught up with Town in the second half and injuries to Staines, Max Meaton and Matt Graham did not help. The visitors lost concentration and Windsor fought back with goals from Kane Jones and Travis Richardson-Hodge. Final score: 2-2.
Tanner rested some of his players for Monday’s game at Westfield, but Corbett struck early to put Farnham in front. Again, Farnham sat back and were hit by two quick goals from Watson. Mark Petts, feeling unwell, was not his usual secure self in Town’s goal and further strikes by Marklew and Bellmaine clinched the points for Westfield. Corbett score a late second goal. Final score: 4-2.
Farnham now face Camberley in two cup finals, starting with the Combined Counties Premier Challenge Cup Final at Windsor’s Stag Meadow ground this Saturday (ko 3pm).
Then it’s the Aldershot FA Senior Cup Final at Aldershot Town’s EBB Stadium on Wednesday (May 11), kick-off 7.45pm.
Camberley beat Fleet Town 2-1 in their delayed semi-final. But the Krooners failed in their bid to win promotion when they lost 3-2 to champions Hartley Wintney on Monday. Camberley finish third, two points behind runners-up Ashford.
Farnham must hope that Camberley’s disappointment will give them a psychological edge in the first final. On the other hand, Camberley may be even more determined to salvage something from the season ...
