FARNHAM TN 1, SPELTHORNE SPORTS 0
FARNHAM Town stretched their unbeaten run to four games and their deserved win over a strong Spelthorne Sports side lifted them into the top half of the Combined Counties Premier League.
Manager Paul Tanner certainly gave his team the seal of approval. “We were good as individuals and even better as a side,” he said. “We were at full strength in every area of the field, so were able to give a proper all-round performance.”
Farnham had to wait until the 66th minute for Mark Corbett to score the only goal of the game, but they always had the measure of Spelthorne. The visitors, who enjoy a pristine playing surface at their own ground, struggled to adapt to a heavy, muddy pitch at the Memorial Ground.
The home side edged possession all the way through the first half and created three decent chances which Corbett, Elliott Cardona and James Thomas failed to put away.
Defensively, with the experienced Darren Wilson at the helm, Farnham were strong and Spelthorne hardly had a sight of goal.
Farnham maintained their high work-rate from the start of the second half and eventually got their reward.
Max Meaton, Wilson and Jack Dillon linked up in a smart move and this time Corbett finished well at the near post.
For the last quarter, Town changed formation to see the game out and again they looked solid at the back, giving the visitors little scope for an equaliser.
Matt Glass came on and nearly nicked a late goal after a swift break from back to front.
Farnham: Petts, Meaton, Graham, Wilson, Macallam, Williams, Dillon, Thomas, Corbett, Lancashire, Cardona. Subs: Glass, Smith, Ramsden.
Farnham visit Chessington this Saturday. On Tuesday, they host Chertsey in the third round of the Aldershot Senior Cup.
All Combined Counties League fixtures were postponed in midweek, including Farnham’s home game with Westfield. Badshot Lea’s Surrey Senior Cup tie against Merstham was again called off due to the weather. Lea are away to AFC Hayes this Saturday.
