FARNHAM TOWN 2, KNAPHILL 1
FARNHAM moved closer to mid-table in the Combined Counties Premier League and their target of 50 points with a hard-earned victory over a Knaphill side determined to put a poor run behind them
Town were still missing several regulars, but George Horner had already proved his worth at right-back and manager Paul Tanner brought in returning student Jamie Phillips.
Sam Henneberg, another young prospect, lined up with Stan Staines, Jack Cox, Sam Slater and Nick Medcraft in a five-man midfield, while lone striker Chris Poole did an excellent job with his hold-up play and high energy levels.

Alton score stoppage-time equaliser to earn draw at Eversley & CaliforniaRichard Ossai made one crucial save before Farnham took the lead after only nine minutes. Ossai’s straight clearance was headed on by Poole and with Knaphill goalkeeper Richard Shelley caught in no-man’s land, Slater, who had timed his run perfectly, lobbed the keeper from 25 yards.
Town, however, became sloppy after taking the lead and handed the initiative to Knaphill who had the speed and technical ability to punish the home side.
On 18 minutes, Scott Costello ghosted into the penalty area and beat Ossai with a skilful chip of his own.
Farnham made amends in the second half with more constructive play and after an early scare when Jimmy Norman missed a great chance for Knaphill, regained the lead in the 62nd minute.
Henneberg’s delivery was headed towards goal by Ben Williams and although George Spiers did his utmost to help the ball over the line, it went down as Williams’ goal.
Knaphill were unfortunate not to again draw level when Costello’s header found the net and the linesman’s flag stayed down. But the referee overruled his assistant and the goal was disallowed for offside.
Farnham then closed ranks at the back and disciplined play by Horner, Spiers, Williams and Phillips saw the game out.
“We were looking for 45 points at this stage in the season and I feel we are showing the right attitude and focus to make sure we come close to matching the success of last season,” said Paul Tanner.
Six games to go and Farnham are looking for a strong finish. They visit fifth-placed Epsom & Ewell this Saturday.
