ALDERSHOT TN 2, WYCOMBE W 2
ALDERSHOT earned a creditable draw in their sixth pre-season friendly – a tough test against League Two side Wycombe Wanderers on a wet evening last Friday.
Trialists Kodi Lyons-Foster, James Rowe, Jack Cook, Jason Akiotu, Aaron Kuhl and Patrick Webber featured for the Shots.
Aldershot deserved their tenth-minute lead after some early near-misses. A superb Bernard Mensah cross was met by Jake Gallagher who, timing timed his run perfectly, slotted in from six yards.
Gary Waddock’s team clung on to their lead until half-time, but then the Chairboys began to assert themselves. On 54 minutes, Rowe conceded a penalty and Dayle Southwell converted for the equaliser.
Fourteen minutes later, Nick Freeman put Wycombe ahead, latching onto Sam Saunders’ pass and beating the advancing Mark Smith.
The Shots promptly bounced back and equalised when Scott Rendell’s header was brilliantly deflected by keeper Scott Brown and, from the quickly-taken corner, Jack Cook used his tall frame to direct the ball into the net.
Smith made two strong saves in the final seconds to keep the scores level.
A good night for the Shots was marred by a knee injury to triallist Aaron Kuhl who left the ground on crutches. Aldershot were pondering whether to sign Kuhl, 21, a former Reading midfielder and the son of former Shots assistant manager Martin Kuhl.
Aldershot: Cole (Smith 46); Kellermann (Alexander 39), Reynolds (Cook 69), Lyons-Foster (Webber 63), Arnold (Akiotu 65); Gallagher (Kuhl 46, Okojie 56), Oyeleke; Taylor (Wrightman 79), Rowe, Mensah; Rendell.
• Aldershot complete their build-up to the season with a home match against League One side AFC Wimbledon tomorrow (Friday), kick-off 7.30pm at the EBB Stadium.
• Aldershot are away to FC Halifax in their opening Vanarama National League fixture on Saturday, August 5. The Shots host Torquay United on Tuesday, August 8.
