BADSHOT Lea prevailed on penalties over Farnham Town on Tuesday night – but it was difficult to pick the winning boss after the game.

Farnham’s Colin Millard was upbeat about the performance of his much-altered side.

But Baggiest co-manager Gavin Smith bemoaned his team’s display and was relieved to get through the Cherry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup second round tie.

Millard said: “We made seven changes from Saturday’s team.

“A lot of those players haven’t played 90 minutes for at least four or five weeks, so to perform like that I’m really pleased.

“The way we played was fantastic. You can see how far we are developing, and how quickly – that was effectively our second team.

“It was a local derby. I told my squad on Saturday that they had to take the emotion out of the game, and to play the game. I don’t think they hurt us too much.

“I couldn’t have asked any more of them in the first half.

“Maybe we tired a little bit in the second half, but you have to give Badshot credit for the way they came back – they were dead and buried really.”

Smith said: “It’s good to get through but we were poor again.

“We were rubbish, especially in the first half. They just didn’t turn up.

“Credit to Farnham – they did what they had to do in the first half. I’m pleased the way we came back but defensively we were a shambles. It was awful.

“We need to improve that, and quickly. Our decision making in the past two games has been poor.

“We try to guide the players the best we can and we have good young players who could play at a higher level.

“But unless they sort out their lifestyles they won’t.

“I was happier the other week when we went out at Fareham on penalties because we actually played really well and deserved to get something out of the game.

“We didn’t deserve to win that game against Farnham.”
