ALDERSHOT Town highlighted the exciting potential in Gary Waddock’s squad with a thoroughly deserved 2-1 victory against League Two Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday.
The Shots raced into a two-goal lead inside ten minutes and restricted Wanderers to a handful of chances until the closing stages.
Scott Rendell tapped in Matt McClure’s cross on eight minutes, and barely 60 seconds later, Bernard Mensah set-up McClure to guide a deft header across goal and in off the far post.
It was the perfect start as Aldershot played with style, commitment and no little pace, and Wycombe found themselves very much second best throughout the first 45 minutes.
The second period, beset by a slew of substitutions, was a more even affair, but still the visitors struggled for penetration until belatedly mounting a grandstand finish which brought a late goal for Will De Havilland, who swept the ball in from a crowded six-yard box.
Waddock said: “For us to put in a performance like that is very pleasing, on the back of a good performance in the heat against MK Dons. The intensity in our performance, against good quality Football League players, was excellent. We’ve played some decent football as well, and it’s slowly coming together.”
The Shots complete their pre-season programme against Crawley Town this Saturday, but will be without striker Charlie Walker, who suffered an ankle injury in the 2-2 draw against MK Dons. Initial scans revealed no broken bone, but he will still be out for the immediate future. However, with Rendell and McClure on form, Waddock will still have ample firepower.
Aldershot: Smith (Cole 65); Alexander, Reynolds, Saville (Evans 55), Arnold (Straker 61); Mensah (Fenelon 61), Gallagher (Nasha 46), Bellamy (Wakefield 46), Allen; Rendell (Rees 70), McClure.
Aldershot have signed winger Iffy Allen following a successful trial. The 22-year-old has featured in several friendlies and now signs a one-year contract with Gary Waddock’s squad.
The Lambeth-born attacker signed for Yeovil Town in July 2015 and played 16 games, having previously made eight appearances for Barnet since his debut in November 2012. His time with the Bees also saw loan spells at Kingstonian, Redhill & Wingate and Finchley during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
