FARNHAM Town’s promotion push was frustrated by the weather again last Saturday.
Having had their Combined Counties League Division One clash away at Eversley & California washed out the previous week, wet weather again put paid to last weekend’s game against lowly Bagshot.
The latest postponement not only denied Town boss Luke Turkington a nostalgic return to his old stomping ground at Krooner Park, which Bagshot groundshare with landlords Camberley, it also saw runaway leaders Jersey Bulls pull even further clear at the top in their pursuit of Premier Division football next season.
Jersey’s 2-0 win at home to Epsom & Ewell on Saturday, their 15th straight win in a so far perfect season, has seen them open up an astonishing 16-point lead over second-placed Farnham, who have three games in hand.
And the leading pair are set for a top-of-the-table showdown in the Channel Islands in nine days time – but not before Farnham face the tricky prospect of AFC Hayes at the Memorial Ground on Saturday, the west London visitors having been relegated from the Premier Division last season.
“Saturday is game day for us and everybody was prepped and ready, but when Mother Nature takes her course you can’t do anything about it,” said Turkington, who will be looking for his in-form side to take their unbeaten run to ten games against Hayes.
“The fact is that we’re in the driving seat and we want to get these games played. We want to keep our winning mentality and tick the games off and hopefully get maximum points, so in that respect it’s very frustrating. We’re aware of how well Jersey are going and we’ve only got one dress rehearsal left before the big one.
“You want to get the games under your belt, the more games the better, but the more the weather keeps turning bad, the more the games keep stacking up. The last thing we want is to have a squad which has to play twice or three times a week because then you are susceptible to niggles and injuries.”
But every rain cloud has a silver lining, according to the Town boss.
“The break does me some good because it gives me the chance to look at some other teams that are playing and do my homework on them, so I don’t rest but the players can. Ones that have picked up niggles and knocks have got the chance to rest up, but it’s frustrating because we want to keep this momentum going but we’ve been halted by the weather.”
Inactive Town were helped on Saturday as closest pursuers Tooting Bec had their game washed out while fourth-placed Walton & Hersham were surprisingly beaten 4-3 at home by Bedfont & Feltham.
“Bedfont could be the kings of the league,” said Turkington. “At the moment they are mid-table but they could determine who goes up and who doesn’t. Bedfont can certainly do us some favours when they play the bigger guns, like they’ve just done with Walton & Hersham, and with us not playing that was probably the highlight of the weekend.”
Turkington himself used Saturday’s down time to size up this weekend’s opposition.
“They are a very Jekyll & Hyde side,” he said. “I can see the class and quality that they have got but I also see the weaknesses that we can exploit.”
