FARNHAM TN 6,
BRITISH AIRWAYS 1
FARNHAM Town kicked off their home league campaign on Saturday with a 6-1 thrashing of Combined Counties newcomers British Airways.
After a shaky start, with the visitors missing two good chances early on, Luke Turkington’s side got a foothold in the game and broke the deadlock on 11 minutes.
Neat play on the right set Nick Medcraft free inside the box and he calmly sidefooted home for his first goal of the season.
The goal settled Town nicely and the lead was doubled five minutes later. This time, Danny Turner found room inside the area and found the bottom corner with a low shot.
To their credit, the visitors didn’t give up and continued to ask questions of the Farnham’s back line, but the game was effectively sealed in the 44th minute. Medcraft won his third penalty of the season and Charlie Horwood converted emphatically.
The second half was only five minutes old when the lively Medcraft squared the ball for Turner to tap home his second goal.
Elliott Cardona added the fifth with a superb lob and, five minutes from time, with the keeper stranded outside his area, Turner curled the ball into an empty net from 25 yards to complete his hat-trick.
The only blemish on Farnham’s display came in added time when Jake Morton crept in at the far post to score a consolation goal for Airways.
SANDHURST TN 2, FARNHAM TN 1
Farnham visited Luke Turkington’s former club, Sandhurst Town, on Tuesday and suffered their first league defeat of the season.
Despite five changes from Saturday, Farnham made the brighter start and took the lead inside two minutes. A shot from debutant Eddie Smith bobbled into a crowd of players and Elliott Cardona reacted quickest to divert the ball into the top corner.
However, Sandhurst began to look more dangerous and equalised 11 minutes later. And it was a bad goal for Farnham as Ashley Ledger was left unmarked at a corner and scored with a free header.
On the half-hour, Paul Rake was allowed time to chest down a long ball and smash home an unstoppable volley to put the Fizzers in front.
Farnham were much better in the second half, but it wasn’t until injury time that the home keeper was seriously tested, Eddie Scurfield going close with a header from a corner.
Sandhurst had skipper Harry Oakley sent off for a second yellow card and three Farnham players were booked in a feisty last 15 minutes. But a jubilant Sandhurst held out to secure their first win of the season.
Farnham visit Kensington Borough this Saturday. On Bank Holiday Monday, they host Godalming in the big Wey Valley local derby (ko 11.30am).
• Promoted Badshot League, after three successive defeats, recorded their first point of the season in the Premier Division with a 2-2 draw at Hanworth Villa on Tuesday. Goals from Ryan Bell and Jack May gave the Baggies a 2-0 lead, but Villa fought back and equalised in the eighth of 10 added minutes.
