Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson felt there were plenty of positives to build on after his side lost 1-0 at home to AFC Totton in their opening game of the season.

Christie Ward’s spectacular strike proved decisive as the visitors claimed all three points in front of a crowd of 1,178 at The Memorial Ground.

“That goal wins any game of football,” said Johnson.

“I’m a little bit frustrated. It’s not the start we wanted. I think a draw would have been a fair result.

“It's all ifs and buts I thought we played quite well. I thought we looked the better side out of the two, but they also had good moments with some chances in the box.

“We're more than good enough to compete at this level. We came out the blocks really well. If Rakish Bingham scores his chance then maybe it's a different game and we're a bit more free-flowing, but the pitch was a bit sticky and the ball got caught under our feet when we broke at pace.

“I thought we looked a bit more compact and a lot better on the ball in the second half.

“We broke well, it was just that final bit when you've got to concentrate on your finish and trying to get it out your feet. Whether it was one touch too many, it happened numerous times.

“There's loads to build on, loads to get better and loads to work on, but at the same time there’s also a lot of positive stuff in there and we look forward to the next one.

“It was a great day and a great turnout. Hopefully there's many more of them to come and we start turning the screw and putting some points on the board.”

New signing Jack Spong made his competitive debut off the bench after joining the Town from Worthing, and Johnson was happy with his impact.

“Jack only came on for 15 minutes but with his touches on the ball you can see what a good player he's going to be,” said Johnson. “We'll look to get him fit and get him going.”

Farnham have a mouthwatering trip to Dagenham & Redbridge on Friday (8pm kick-off), and Johnson is looking forward to the challenge.

"It's a great one to go and enjoy the occasion, give a good account of ourselves and see what we can do,” said Johnson.
