ALTON Cycling Club’s Jack Freeman competed in the finals of the GHS (George Herbert Chancer) Championship, organised by Welwyn Wheelers, and run on the F10/10 10-mile course on the A10 near Ware in Hertfordshire.

Over 130 riders competed in this event for 12-16 year olds where youngsters are allowed to ride for their schools if they do not belong to a cycling club.

Freeman had pre-qualified for these national finals and found himself up against last year’s winner, Sam Henning, who repeated his success, this time with a time of 20mins 21secs.

The Alton member was one of only four riders to beat the 21-minute mark and he just missed a podium place with an excellent 20-54 for fourth spot – a great achievement for Jack and the Alton club.

Last year, on his debut in this competition, he came 19th with 22-50. His time and placing this time showed just how much he has improved.

l James Boyman was fastest rider in the a3crg club’s final 10-mile time trial of the season last Saturday.

The Farnham Road Club member clocked a fast time of 18-37 on the Liss-based A3 course, with Rob Sharland (Paceline RT) second quickest with 18-44. Both are former Alton College students.

In joint third were Kevin Tye (Velorefined Aerosmith) and James Lowden (Neon Velo) with 19-01.

Quickest for the women was Lesley Walkling (Velo St Raphael) with 21-49, followed by Sarah Matthews (a3crg) in 22-18 and Sophie Household (Velo St Raphael) in 23-04.
