FRENSHAM Sailing Club members have had a busy month of competition away from their own water.
Frensham is known as the ‘nursery of champions’ for its youth sailing – something that was again underlined in the Cadet National Championship held at Weymouth.
Megan Ferguson and Yasmine Sfaxi finished third overall in light weather conditions when the pair are known as strong wind competitors.
Ralph Neville came third in the single-handed RS Terra Nationals at Plas Heli. The Terra class is designed for younger children and is a design of boat that is becoming very popular, and the more so at Frensham.
At a more senior level, Roger Gilbert won the Merlin Rocket National Championships at Penzance and then, with crew Ben McGrane, took second place in the International 14 Class world event at Carnac in Brittany.
The championship season is now over and Frensham crews, both young and senior, will be concentrating on winter sailing and thinking of big events next year.
Frensham sailors form a significant part of the nations team for the Cadet Dinghy World Championships to be held in Argentina. This is an expensive operation, but the team have obtained the support of a commercial sponsor.
Zac pulls off clean sweep
FRENSHAM Sailing Club’s Zac West has secured his place in the RYA national squad
The first Laser 4.7 Ladder event of the winter season was held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the sailing venue for the London Olympics.
It was also the first qualifier for sailors to make the 2016/17 Laser 4.7 national squad.
Zac, a pupil at All Hallows School, won the event by showing great consistency and winning every race over the two days. A superb achievement.
