DESPITE the best efforts of the weather to delay its progress, the North Hampshire Seniors Jubilee Winter League reached an exciting conclusion, with Alton Golf Club emerging the victors.

The league, formed in 2002, is played throughout the winter months, with Andover, Dummer, Test Valley, The Hampshire, Weybrook Park and Alton playing each other home and away.

Alton knew a tough winter lay ahead when their first match against Weybrook was postponed due to heavy rain. There were frozen greens at The Hampshire and the Alton players had never been as wet as during the match at Dummer GC.

There was still a grandstand finish, however, with any one of three teams able to take the title on the final day.

It was the third consecutive year that Alton had been in contention, but they had not won the league since 2007-08.

Alton again managed to win all their home matches, while drawing at both Andover and Dummer. All that was needed on the final day was a draw at Test Valley and that is what Alton achieved.

Presentation day was at Test Valley and included a round of golf, a meal and a charity raffle which raised £250 for Breast Cancer Research. Finally, Terry McCrossan, Alton Golf Club’s seniors captain, was presented with the Brian Young Trophy.

Terry said: “What a pleasure it has been to be Alton Seniors captain. Since retiring, the golf club has become a major part of my life and this, so far, is the highlight.”
