THERE was a record entry for Farnham Golf Club’s Championship and Fletcher Bowl, with 146 players teeing up.
After the first round, title holder Nathan Tull was joint leader with Rob Davis on 73 (+1), while Ollie Kannemeyer led the handicap competition with a brilliant net 66.
The current format involves a halfway cut and this year 75 players made it through to what turned out to be a rather wet Sunday.
Due to the conditions, the scoring was not quite as good in the second round, but there were still some stand-out performances.
In the Club Championship, Tom Spreadborough showed his potential by firing a fantastic 69 to follow his 75 and post a level-par total of 144 for the 36 holes. His second-round score was particularly impressive because he was four over par after five holes.
There was a tense wait as Tull finished his round. His level-par 72 meant he had been pipped by one shot and Spreadborough was the new champion.
However, Tull had done enough to secure the Fletcher Bowl with a net total of 139.
• Farnham Golf Club’s Alan Lovelace won the Surrey PGA Championships at Bletchingly GC. Scores of 68 and 75 got him into a play-off with Nico Els and Lovelace closed out the victory with a birdie at the first hole.
• The Farnham team of Mike Tiddy (capt), Steve Dixon (handicap sec), Colin Smith (vice-capt) and Eddy Williams (junior capt) played in the Usmar Trophy at Effingham Golf Club. Playing in two better-ball pairs, Farnham amassed 84 points to finish second overall.
• The final ‘major’ of the summer for Farnham juniors was the Centenary Trophy. The handicap medal competition was won by Scott Barham with an excellent net 68, by just one shot from Charlie Chilcott, with Josh Strauss in third place. The accompanying Centenary stableford competition was won by Milly Woad with 36 points from runner-up Jake Platt on 32.
