TWO extra brave jockeys were amongst the winners at Hackwood Park’s Vine & Craven point-to-point on Easter Monday.

Lily Bradstock, 20, who spent more than two years in Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital as a teenager, rode her first winner at her fourth attempt, taking the J Passey & Son Ladies Open on 13-year-old Carruthers.

Carruthers, owned by Lily’s mother, Sara Carruthers, was bred by her late grandfather, Lord Oaksey. “Dad would have loved that,” said Sara, “and it’s a real thrill for us all after what Lily has been through.”

Guy Disney, an Afghan War veteran who lost his lower right leg in action seven years ago, won the JM Finn Maiden on his own Dan’s Wee Man. It was his third winner since he was allowed by the BHA to continue his career as an amateur rider.

There was no evidence of his disability as he completed the three miles in testing conditions. The three other runners failed to finish.

Gus Levinson, aged 16, rode his second winner of the weekend in the Novice race, sponsored by Hattingley Valley Wines. Gus had won at Kimble on Easter Saturday and is now in the running for the National Novice championship.

But he will have to fight off the challenge of Jack Andrews who scored on Jump to the Beat in the Caviste Jockey Club Maiden. Jack, also on six for the season, is the 17-year-old brother of Gina and Bridget Andrews, both winners of the Novice title in recent years.
