SOUTHAMPTON UNI 0, ALDERSHOT & FARNHAM 5
ALDERSHOT & Farnham resumed their quest for the Hampshire Hockey Women’s League championship with an emphatic victory over the Southampton students.
With Phoebe Bryant making a guest appearance up front, A&F took an early lead with a cheeky goal from Sara Nankivell.
But the rest of the half was goalless, a poor reflection of the visitors’ hard work in attack, leaving goalkeeper Lisa Bilsby chilled to the bone through lack of action.
Coach Mark Robinson galvanised Aldershot at half-time and with the wind behind them and the sun no longer in their eyes, they were ready to turn pressure into goals.
A well-rehearsed short corner brought them the second goal, Mel Sutherland beating the keeper’s knee with a drag flick.
Another short corner was awarded and Sutherland again found the net, the ball deflecting in off the post defender’s foot.
Next up, Katrina Hellier surprised the University keeper with a lovely turn and accurate placement: 4-0 to A&F.
Southampton won a short corner of their own, but were denied a goal by the dynamic reactions of post player Lauren Pestell.
Evie Kenna completed the scoring with a brilliant on-the-move flick over the keeper’s shoulder.
This comfortable win sets A&F up nicely for the top-of-the-table clash with Haslemere at Woolmer Hill this Saturday. Haslemere’s fixture at Winchester was postponed, as was Alton’s home match against Southampton II.
