ROMSEY 75, ALTON 7
A well-organised, fit and competent side, they had scored their bonus-point try within 20 minutes of kick-off, mainly by deftly moving the ball from side to side across the field with the support runners coming from deep, at speed and at the correct angle.
Alton did manage to dominate the tight scrumming and were rewarded when scrum-half Mark Crowther took a quick penalty and set up a driving maul for back row Rhys Jenkins who was driven over the line by Bruce Oliphant. Simon Ford added the conversion.
Oliphant had to leave the field shortly afterwards when what looked distinctly like a tip-tackle caused him to crash-land and dislocate his shoulder.
By half-time, Romsey had scored six converted tries to lead 42-7 and they added another five in the second half. To rub it in, kicker Jake Fulford missed only one conversion all afternoon.
Plenty of lessons for Alton to learn, but they deserve credit for never giving up and making life as difficult as they could for Romsey.
Alex George, on his 1st XV debut, made an impact in the middle of the lineout, winning some great ball, while replacement Dan Napier also made his first appearance and did not disappoint.
Romsey tries: Macaulay Campbell, Jack Groves, Dan Penn-Newman (2), Jim Windebank, Josh Davies (2), Luke Till (2), Toby Bull (2). Conversions: Jake Fulford (10).
