AN appeal has been made to girls and women to meet their ‘inner warrior’.
The plea has come from London 2 South West club Farnham, which is running an open day on Sunday especially for aspiring or potential female rugby players.
It will include coaching sessions from 1pm-3pm for all age groups from under-eights to over-18s led by former Wasps and England student player Helen Coyte and the Army’s women’s rugby development officer, Louise Dennis.
Farnham has a growing ladies and girls’ section but is always looking for more players to develop and to achieve the club’s ambition to compete in the club ladies’ leagues.
A notable development success to date is Jinny Leybourne, who was recently selected for Surrey under-15 girls. Her Farnham team mate Ada Rogers, 15, said: “I really like playing rugby as it’s a fun team game that has helped me build my confidence.”
Mark Weeks, communications secretary at Farnham Rugby Club, said: “By recruiting players now we can let them enjoy the game through the milder months. We also run a successful O2 touch rugby unit here through the summer that is open to girls of all ages.
“By running this inner warrior day now, we hope to hit the opening of next season running with full squads across all age groups playing and enjoying the game of rugby.”
Girls who come down early for the session have the chance to watch some top-quality rugby as Surrey men’s under-20s take on their Essex counterparts in the first round of the Jason Leonard Cup, which kicks off at noon at Monkton Lane.
