FARNHAM RFC under-9 players and their families had a day to remember when they visited Twickenham for Big Game 10 – Harlequins versus Northampton Saints in the Aviva Premiership.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the Big Game, some mini teams were invited to play on the hallowed pitch at half-time and Farnham U9 coach Andy Matthews, with the help of Steve Tomlinson and Mark Jones, secured a fantastic opportunity for 13 of his players to run out under the floodlights and in front of 80,000 spectators.
There was a buzzing family atmosphere as the Farnham youngsters took their seats right at the front, with a superb view of the action.
Ten minutes before half-time, with Quins rampant, the kids and parents headed to the south-west corner. Farnham were drawn to play against Reigate and the excitement levels soared as the noise from the capacity crowd reached a crescendo amidst a flurry of late tries.
The big men left the field and Farnham ran on to the field, led by captain Emma Parry. The big screens showed the side being beamed to the stadium and cries of ‘Farnham, Farnham, Farnham’ echoed down from the west stand.
But the cauldron of Twickenham was forgotten as Farnham focussed on their game. A kick-off from Spencer Jackson, a pass to Harry Matthews, slick hands to Edward Nye, James Townley-Jones, to William Frawley to Tom Wattenbach and Sam Charlton over in the corner. Move of the day? Perhaps.
Reigate were soundly defeated and a jubilant Farnham ran off the pitch to great acclaim, returning to watch the second half. The Quins won 50-21.
