FORMER Farnham Rugby Club junior Ryan Wilson rewarded the selectors by helping Scotland to a 36-20 win in Italy and their first victory in the 2016 Six Nations.
The Glasgow Warriors number 8 escaped a ban in January after his citing for ‘grabbing the testicles’ of an opponent was dismissed.
Had he been found guilty of a high-end offence, Wilson would have faced a long suspension and the 26-year-old was at first left out of the Six Nations squad. “We made a decision with Ryan before he was cited,” explained coach Vern Cotter.
Wilson, who grew up in Hale and played for Farnham RFC from the age of five up to 16, was recalled to Scotland’s squad of 23 in Rome and was promoted from the bench after Bath’s Dave Denton sustained a groin strain.
The former Lord Wandsworth College pupil relished playing in front of 68,000 spectators at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and played 67 minutes before making way for Josh Strauss. It was Scotland’s first Six Nations win for two years.
