WITH Andy Patience standing down as head coach at the end of last season, Petersfield Rugby Club will start the 2016/17 season with new men at the helm of their senior section.

James Alder takes over as head coach, with James Clayson as assistant coach and player development manager.

The new duo have a mandate to shape and steer the existing coaching team as the club looks to build on its playing numbers and Hampshire league status.

Alder was previously assistant coach at Winchester RFC and brings over 30 years of rugby league and union experience. He played professional rugby league for Leigh Centurions, as well as representing the Army.

Currently studying for a BSc in applied sports and exercise at Winchester University, he intends to share his knowledge and experience in all areas of the game with the Penns Place club.

He said: “I arrive full of energy and enthusiasm for the new season at Petersfield and look forward to developing the large pool of players with the coaching team.”

James Clayson orchestrated the turnaround in playing fortunes of Southsea Nomads RFC last season and is focused on bringing his Australian brand of play and player development to Petersfield.

“I’m looking forward to my new challenge at Petersfield as well as the partnership with James. As a coach, it is always refreshing to see a club with a positive attitude to its rugby and player/coach development.”

The two will link up with and look to enhance the existing coaching team at Petersfield. Pre-season training will start on Thursday, July 7.

Club chairman Stuart Barden added: “In going through the interview process, it was evident from the start that these two were the stand-out candidates.

“Getting them both is a massive bonus for the club. They will both bring their own unique methods to playing and training, with player development the heart of what they want to do. Exciting times ahead!”
