THE frustrations of the last four weeks were cast aside as Farnham racked up a thumping bonus-point win over fellow mid-table side Old Mid-Whitgiftians in London 3 South-West.
Farnham shuffled the pack again, with Ian Williams and Ben Adams restored to the second row and the back row of Andrew Bond, Dan Williams and Toby Comley given another chance.
Kicking with the breeze, Whitgiftians took the lead with a confident penalty from halfway. This was to be their only score.
Skipper Mike Salmon is hard to stop at 6ft 2in and nearly 15 stone and after his 45-yard charge from full-back, Dan Williams and Bond got the ball to Comley who scored in the corner.
Soon, Farnham were surging back into the Mids’ 22 and scrum-half Oli Brown spotted a gap to send Comley over for his second try; 10-3.
The visitors were under the cosh in the swirling wind. Penalised at the maul, they held the drive from the lineout, but Farnham were unstoppable at the following scrum and Dan Williams claimed the push-over try.
Whitgiftians fought back with a series of multi-phase attacks, but Farnham refused to wobble, absorbed the threat, reorganised and took their 17-3 lead into half-time.
Now with the wind advantage and with the advice of coaches Matt Kemp and Jamie Salmon ringing in their ears, Farnham played in the OMW half with deep kicks to the corners and driving mauls.
From broken play, Mike Salmon spied a gap out wide. James Corlett and Jemi Akin-Olugbade were on hand, but the captain saw his chance and brushed the defence aside to go all the way for a superb individual try.
Trailing 22-3, the Mids were stung into action, but again their attacks were absorbed. The home side then broke out down the left through winger Luke Jermyn and the ball passed via Corlett and Elliott Rich to Akin-Olugbade who sliced through a confused defence to touch down under the posts. Easy extras for Mike Salmon; 29-3.
With OMW wilting, a succession of penalties resulted in a five-metre scrum and a second try, again converted, for Dan Williams.
The icing on this festive cake came from the kick- off as Corlett smashed through the centre and put fly-half Toby Salmon clear to dot down his tenth try of the season.
At last, this was a true team performance by Farnham, from the starting XV through to replacements James Trodden, Fran Meagher and Will Markham, all coming to the party.
Farnham podium points: Ian Williams 3, Jemi Akin-Olugbade 2, Oli Brown 1.
