THE fact that Cambridge extended their unbeaten home run to 15 matches was perhaps no surprise, but the ease with which they cruised to victory on Tuesday highlighted Aldershot's role as the authors of their own downfall.

The Skrill Premier leaders, already seven points clear after just 18 matches, were ruthless in punishing the Shots' defensive frailties and provided sharp contrast to the visitors' own lack of cutting-edge up front.

Yet for all but the final few seconds of an extended first half, Andy Scott's side had matched their exalted opponents, only to succumb to an untimely sucker-punch which prompted a capitulation to the magnitude of three goals in 12 minutes.
