PLAYERS from Farnham’s two floorball hockey teams won everything that was up for grabs at the final TCL youth league fixture.
The Shooting Stars secured the under-13s league title, the Fireballs won the under-16 competition, and all of their four goalkeepers won the netminder awards. The under-16 goalkeepers both averaged less than one goal conceded per match for the whole season.
Adam Spittle won the league’s top under-13 goalscorer award and Eben Dring was the top under-16 goalscorer.
And a spokesman for the Farnham Unihockey & Floorball Club conceded that they felt a little embarrassed as no other team in either competition picked up an award in any category.
Peter Goodman, the Fireballs coach and club president, put it all down to the players, saying that the youngsters are passionate about the sport, some even joining adult training so that they can practise three times per week.
But also having Geoff Campbell-Brady as a dedicated goalkeeping coach helped, he said.
Mr Goodman continued: “It was Dan Wilmott’s first season coaching the under-13s outfield team and he helped the Shooting Stars hugely. But it’s not just the skill and effort, they look after each other. When Eben Dring was close to eclipsing the London Capitals captain’s score tally, all of the Fireballs started passing to him to help him achieve the top under-16 scorer award.
“Other players, including his own brother, were close to getting top scorer but all they focused on was helping young Eben get first prize, ignoring their own shooting opportunities in front of goal, and also shouting encouragement from the bench. It was quite moving.”
Mr Goodman added: “We flattened some of the teams, including our arch rivals 5-0 at the end of the season, but there was no showboating by the players or rubbing any of the other teams’ noses in it. They are such a lovely bunch of youngsters.”
The two teams will next be in action in the National Youth Floorball Cup in Cheltenham on Sunday (June 16).
Farnham floorball club welcomes new boys and girls who wish to try out the sport late each Saturday afternoon at its Farnham Leisure Centre base.
