THE last action of the Aldershot Table Tennis League season came in Division Two, with the cup final and the deciding promotion match. Both matches were enthralling.
The Div II Cup final was between Tennis D, going for a potential double, and Broadmoor A. There were some tight rubbers, most notably Tony Gabriel (Broadmoor) getting the better of Dave Hewitt and then Dave Jarvis beating Gabriel in five.
Jarvis chalked up another win and Keith Jones beat Hewitt to set up the final match of the evening between the two unbeaten players, Michael Kwan (Tennis) and Pu Zhang (Broadmoor).
Kwan was a clear favourite after sailing through the season unbeaten and he easily won the first two games. But Zhang, almost as easily, took the next two to set up a fifth-game decider. Kwan prevailed 13-11 to give Tennis the first leg of the double.
The next evening, Bentley B entertained Old Woking who needed a win to secure the title. Bentley, like so many teams in this division, possess some outstanding players, but also some less strong ones, which explains the tightness of the division. It turned out to be one of those matches where every player won and lost.
Paul Farrant and Robin Street both won twice for Bentley, while Bill Matlock claimed two for Old Woking. Crucially, Bentley won the doubles and so took the match 6-4.
This meant that Tennis D were champions by a single point, and so achieved the league and cup double.
