Farnham’s annual sporting showcase of key volunteers and achievements, the town’s sports awards, takes place on the evening of Monday, February 6.

But the deadline for entries is fast approaching.

All the entries need to be with the organisers by midnight on Monday (January 16).

Sports Council secretary Sue Keogh said: “There are so many deserving people, teams and clubs in the Farnham area but we rely totally on individuals or clubs to nominate them.

“Every worthy nomination receives recognition of some sort so we ask people to please make sure they complete the nomination form – it’s a very simple process.”

The main award is the Sports Personality of the Year, won previously by local sporting legends such as rugby player Jonny Wilkinson, cricketer Graham Thorpe and double Paralympian gold medallist Rachel Morris.

Yet Farnham’s sports council offers so many categories there’s something for everyone and anyone who contributes to the sporting life of the town.

And this new year represents a significant milestone for the Farnham Sports Council – they were established in 1973, so the 2023 awards represent 50 years of honouring sporting achievements in the town.

David Gill, the chair of Farnham Sports Council, said: “We hope to receive the usual high number of nominations for the 2023 special sports awards event – and I must stress the awards are open to everyone.

“This year, in our 50th anniversary, we hope to recognise some extraordinary people, teams and clubs at both our sports awards event and, later in the year, we intend to stage another special event to celebrate and reflect on 50 years of sport in Farnham.

“It should be quite a year for sport.”

When completing the application form, nominees should try to meet as many of the listed ‘specific criteria’ as possible, because all nominations will be judged against this.

As part of the Sports Council’s commitment to working in partnership with others, there will be discretionary awards made each year for outstanding achievement – the Mayor of Waverley and the Mayor of Farnham Awards, and a special Herald Award.

Farnham Sports Council welcome nominations from all parts of the town’s sporting family and let their officers know if you have any queries – but please nominate!

It’s easy to enter. Complete and return the electronic nomination form that can be found on the Farnham Sports Council website.
