FARNHAM Road Club’s Tuesday 10-mile time trial went ahead, despite heavy rain and sleet, and the weather cleared sufficiently to allow 17 solo riders and one ‘two-up’ team to contest the event.
Darran Clare of Blazing Saddles RT shrugged off the cold to win in a fast time of 22mins 29secs, followed by Peter Franks (Charlotteville) in 23-28 and Ben Houston (East Grinstead) in 23-29.
Elisabeth-Jane Harris (Podium Ambition), ‘warming up’ for the women’s Tour de Yorkshire, recorded 24-10 on a road bike to claim fifth place.
Greg Harding was the fastest of Farnham’s own riders, finishing in 25-41. He was followed by Roger Chapman in 26-34, Duncan Vardy (a rare race appearance) in 27-02 and Ian Howard in 27-13, while the ‘two-up’ team of Zoe Gibbs and Andy Weller completed the course in 31-07.
Time-keepers were Jim Brown and Ian Thomas, helped at the start by Michael Rice and Jim Parker, with Nigel Bicknell, Paul Charman and Richard Williams all offering any further assistance needed. Riders waiting to start were amused by Ian Thomas’s ‘running on the spot’ in an attempt to keep warm.
