FARNHAM Road Club’s last open event of the season was a 25-mile time trial for tandems and teams of two or four riders.
Conditions were distinctly cool and riders faced a strong headwind on the outward leg of the A31 course.
Fastest of the tandems was the pairing of Peter Oliver and Jan Newman (Fairly United Cycling Team) who came home in 57mins 34secs.
The day’s quickest time came in the ‘two-up’ team event, with Lewis Keightley (Team Bottrill) and Jon Rowley (Poole Wheelers) recording 52mins 06secs, nearly three minutes ahead of their nearest rivals, Andy Langdown and Tom Lane (Blazing Saddles) who managed 54-58.
Newbury Road Club’s Rachael Elliott and Ian Greenstreet were third in 55-28, followed by Derek Dowden and Virginia McGee of Charlotteville CC in 1-03-37.
The ‘four-up’ event was won by Southborough & District’s team of Rob Stephenson, Matt Kuwertz, Chris Wolton and Rory Barrett in 52mins 47secs.
The Andover Wheelers quartet of Simon Healey, Ed Charlton-Weedy, Matthew Buckley and Nigel Pratt came second in 53-36 and third place went to Velo Club Venta (Smales, Naulls, Franklin and Fleming) in 54-21.
The timekeepers were Deana Rice and Jim Brown. Club members and friends acted as marshals and manned the refreshment bar at HQ. The event secretary was Paul Charman.
Stuart Morgan was Farnham’s best rider with 23-29, while the tandem of Robert Allen and Paul Charman managed 24-13. Other Farnham times: David Clifford 24-44, Roger Chapman 25-25, Paul Barber 25-38, Jim Parker 26-21, Nigel Bicknell 33-46.
Farnham RC rider James Boyman claimed 10th place in the CTT National 10-Mile Championships, promoted near Rake by the a3crg club. Boyman recorded 21mins 45 seconds in windy and difficult conditions on a course not noted for fast times. Only 70 seconds separated the first ten riders, with defending champion Richard Bussell (Aerocoach) retaining his title with 20-35.
